All of these species are members of the genus Canis with 78 chromosomes, allowing interbreeding. Genomic studies indicate that many eastern wolf and coyote populations show admixture, but western gray wolves (e.g., in Alaska and the Rocky Mountains) have very little to no coyote admixture.
